As the most important living master of abstract art, Sean Scully’s second edition of retrospective in China --- 'Sean Scully: Resistance and Persistence. Paintings 1967-2015. London and New York' - will be unveiled at the Art Museum of Nanjing University of the Arts (AMNUA) on April 8, 2016.

'Resistance and Persistence' is the title not only of this exhibition but also of Sean Scully’s collection of essays published in 2006, which includes his seminal essays on Giorgio Morandi, Van Gogh and Mark Rothko. "Resistance and persistence" is also a summary of the artist's way of working and his art-spirit. The director of AMNUA Li Xiaoshan commented: ‘Sean Scully’s importance lies not only in his inheritance from the old Modern masters but also in the richness of his own artistic expression. I believe that once again, with his new work coming to China, hosted by our museum, there will be a new surge in debate and discussion, which will contribute towards the richness of our ‘soil’’.

Sean Scully was born in Dublin in 1945 and was brought up in London and immigrated to the States in 1975. He currently lives and works in New York, Barcelona and outside Munich.

Sean has exhibited widely in the most prominent museums and institutes around the world, including but not limited to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), the Fundació Joan Miró (Spain), the National Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.) and the Pinacoteca Art Museum of S?o Paulo.

'Resistance and Persistence' is organized by AMNUA and co-organized by the British Council during 8th Apr. – 8th May. 2016. All the artwork are authorized by Sean and provided by Sean Scully’s workshop.
